The baby boomer generation, born between 1946 and 1964, grew up believing that they were going to be young forever. We have all heard the commercials and we have seen the ads that 60 is the new 40 and that 50 is the new 30. The boomers have redefined aging and this is going to apply to their housing needs as well.
This generation wants to remain youthful and they do not want their homes to reflect anything that suggests handicapped accessibility. There is a growing belief that as the baby boomers age and become less physically active, that they will need many different types of accommodations in their homes which will allow them to age in place. The truth is they don’t want to have to deal with these things until it becomes inevitable.
The baby boomers dream homes will reflect comfort and not age. The boomers are ready for their dream home. They have raised their children and feel that at this point in their lives they deserve it. This generation is also going to reinvent grand parenting and they want their dream home to have the amenities for their families when they visit. They want to include things like granite countertops, walk-in showers, and wine cellars, wet bar areas, home theatres and surround sound, under and above cabinet lighting, hardwood or ceramic tile floors, state of the art appliances and so much more.
A survey conducted by the National Association of Homebuilders showed that this generation prefers single story living with three bedrooms. Those who are younger than the boomers prefer two story homes with 4 bedrooms. Other items that were important to this generation were energy efficiency, low maintenance and a high emphasis on quality.
